Andy first came to Hilton Head as a college student in 1985 and fell for the island the way most people do — hard, and permanently. When we got married and settled in Atlanta, Hilton Head became our annual escape, every single year since 2000. Eventually we bought a condo. Then, last year, we bought a home in Hilton Head Plantation, and now we live here full time — still slightly amazed that “island local” is our actual job description.

Forty years of eating here taught us what every visitor learns the hard way: Hilton Head has hundreds of restaurants and you have maybe ten vacation meals. The math is brutal — one mediocre dinner is 10% of your trip.

We live here. We eat everywhere. And we built BestBites around one simple promise: if a dish is on this site, we’d order it again. We don’t review restaurants — we recommend individual dishes, because the best key lime pie and the best fish tacos are almost never under the same roof.

How dishes make the list

BestBites Faves are our own discoveries — personal go-tos we keep coming back for. Fan Picks are dishes our followers ask us to try. If a requested dish is great, it joins the list. If it isn’t… you just never hear about it. Nobody gets hurt, and the list stays honest.

The no-pay promise

No restaurant has ever paid to be featured, and none ever will. We pay for our own meals. That’s the whole business model of trust.
